Farmers’ route to Athens center on Tuesday, ELAS (Greek Police) strategy unveiled

The "ELAS" does not wish to confront as sources say, however, they are making it clear that "Farmers have right to demonstrate, but Athens cannot be shut down for two days"

Newsroom February 19 09:11

The ELAS plan is in full readiness for the arrival of tractors and buses carrying farmers to central Athens on Tuesday afternoon with reports saying that a rally will be held at 17:30 on Tuesday afternoon at Omonia and at 18:30 the rally at Syntagma.

According to reports, at the meeting held on Sunday evening under the Minister of Civil Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, it was decided that all tractors and vehicles of the farmers would initially reach Athens Avenue and from there they would hold a motorized march to Karaiskaki Square and eventually to Omonia Square.

As for how the tractors will move to the center of Athens, the decision of the ELAS is to do this either through Panepistimiou or through Stadiou as one of these two main roads should be open so that emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, etc. can move unhindered.

At the same meeting it was decided that as many tractors as come to Attica, as many will enter the centre of Athens, i.e. there should be no ceiling on the maximum number of agricultural vehicles.

According to what the representative of the agricultural federation of agricultural associations of Larissa, Socrates Aliftiras, told ANT1, it is estimated that about 200 tractors will be in Syntagma Square, while 5,000 people have registered to move by bus.

Included in the same plan is an arrangement with farmers who will arrive at the Aphidnon toll road from northern Greece and the Elefsina toll road from southern Greece, so that all agricultural vehicles and tractors will set off together for the centre of the capital.

As for the buses that will transport farmers to the rally, the ELAS plan is for them to gather at OAKA so that the farmers can then reach the center of Athens with the Athens Central Railway Station.

As part of this plan, the entire traffic police force will be on the road, while all ELAS forces in the basin have been put on alert.

As explained from Katehaki and Alexandras Avenue, there is no intention of the ELAS to confront the farmers, with the same sources, however, making it clear that “it is the right of the farmers to demonstrate but Athens cannot be closed for two days”.

The estimate is that the tractors and farmers will leave Athens on Wednesday, with ELAS forces taking over guarding the tractors in the centre of the capital.
