Kerameos: Personal data of voters is secured – What does the legislation secure

Three separate investigations are currently underway regarding Asimakopoulou's emails, stated the Minister of Interior

Newsroom April 10 02:48

There has been a sharp increase in registrations for postal voting in the upcoming European elections on the epistoliki.gov.gr platform, according to the Minister of Interior.

As Niki Kerameos stated on SKAI TV, registrations have exceeded 68,000, with Greek citizens from 107 different countries, ranging from African countries to Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

Registrations continue until Monday, April 29th.

The personal data of voters is secured, expressed the minister, adding that there are three ongoing investigations regarding the email leak involving Michèle Asimakopoulou – by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the judiciary, and the Data Protection Authority.

What does the legislation secure?

According to the law, electoral data – containing names and residential addresses of voters – are public information, and each candidate in the elections may have access to them and send electoral material to the voters’ homes.

The data is provided to candidates depending on the case – for example, a mayoral or council candidate may obtain the electoral rolls of voters in their municipality.

Similarly, a Member of the European Parliament may have access to the electoral rolls of the constituency.

However, voters’ information does not include their telephone numbers and emails.
