Bird flu: Spreading in the USA & Europe – How much are we at risk for a new pandemic

Given that humans do not have immune defenses against bird flu viruses the emergence of a virus capable of infecting & spreading rapidly among the population poses the risk of a pandemic

Newsroom April 11 09:41

Scientists worldwide are closely monitoring the spread of bird flu in mammals, maintaining a vigilant stance for potential widespread transmission to humans.

The risk of human cases from bird flu – infection with pandemic potential, according to experts – is still considered low.

However, the spread to mammals is causing concern as evolutionarily they are closer to humans, thus facilitating the adaptation of the virus to infect humans.

Concern among experts about bird flu has been reignited in recent weeks, prompted by a case in a human in the USA and the spread of the virus strain in cattle on farms in at least six states.

These infections represent the first extensive outbreak of bird flu in cattle, prompting experts to closely monitor the disease.

The outbreak on farms is concerning because humans frequently come into contact with cattle on farms, giving the virus the opportunity to spread.
