UN: Iran invokes its right to legitimate defence, while Israel calls for sanctions

"Iran does not seek escalation but will respond vigorously to any threat" emphasized the Iranian diplomat. "The Council must take action" urged Israel

Newsroom April 15 11:18

“The Iran ‘had no choice but to exercise its right to legitimate defence’,” stated the ambassador of the Islamic Republic to the UN, Amir Saïd Iravani, during the emergency session of the Security Council, convened after the unprecedented Iranian attack on Israel.

“The Security Council failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security” by not condemning the bombing on April 1 against the Iranian consulate in Damascus, “in these circumstances, the Islamic Republic of Iran had no choice but to exercise its right to legitimate defence,” said the Iranian diplomat, reassuring that Tehran does not seek escalation but will respond vigorously to “any threat or attack.”

Israel demands “all possible sanctions” against Iran

The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations called on the Security Council to impose “all possible sanctions” against Iran following its unprecedented attack on Israeli territory.

“The Council must act,” said Gilad Erdan during the urgent emergency session convened after the Iranian attack with drones and missiles, particularly insisting on “imposing all possible sanctions against Iran before it is too late.”

At the start of the emergency session of the UN Security Council on developments in the Middle East, at the request of Benjamin Netanyahu following the Iranian attack on Israel, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the Middle East is on the brink, with the peoples of the region facing the real danger of a full-scale catastrophic conflict.

“Now is the time for maximum restraint,” said Guterres, continuing in the same tone: “Now is the time for de-escalation and relaxation.”

“It is time to step back from the brink. It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East,” said Guterres.

He also called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. “Neither the region nor the world can withstand more war,” he emphasized.
