Kasselakis will propose 5 candidates for the EU ballot – The old, the lifestyle & SYRIZA’s “35”

Athletes, actors, entertainment journalists, and party executives are the winners in the preliminaries

Newsroom April 16 01:01

Former MPs and ministers of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, athletes, actors, entertainment journalists, and party executives emerged as winners in the primaries for the selection of the 35 candidates for Members of the European Parliament of the official opposition in an innovative process for Koumoundourou’s standards, but also indicative of the party’s social appeal at this stage.

Although the formation of the Euro-list passed into the hands of the party base and friends of SYRIZA, in the end of the election day, prominent figures and candidates with great recognition dominated, reinforcing the impression that the shift of interest of the official opposition to new fields of politics also drags its audience. In the era of Kasselakis, SYRIZA has opened its doors to new audiences, with the risk, however, of losing part of its traditional social base, as Thanasis Karteros emphatically pointed out in his article. Ringing the alarm bell, “the café, his tours, and the polls show, indeed, that many of the stationary are moving. At the same time, however, they also show that almost half of SYRIZA’s voters of 2023 are turning their backs on the party and its president,” estimated Mr. Karteros, saying about Stefanos Kasselakis that “he repels them instead of attracting them.”

Although Stefanos Kasselakis took on the innovative project of the Primaries, SYRIZA does not seem to rise impressively in the polls, with the latest one from Prorata indicating a range of 13.5-16.5%, far from the goal of overturning and leading, as set by the President of SYRIZA.

On the contrary, “we predict and estimate that the government’s decline will continue, which means that compared to the election results of June, the government will show a significant decline. This also means that if the momentum of SYRIZA continues, something we are trying to achieve, this decline will be reduced,” explained yesterday the Press Spokesperson of SYRIZA, Voula Kehagia, adding that “reducing the decline is not only a victory for SYRIZA but a victory for the restoration of the image in the political scene.”

In the aftermath of the statement by the former Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, who spoke about the need to “re-balance” the political system in the upcoming elections, Ms. Kehagia mentioned that “what happened in June with one party having the primacy and absolute dominance and the others trailing far behind was an image that upset many.” “We want things to be restored,” she continued, ending with the wish “may SYRIZA gain such momentum that it can cut the thread first, but we believe that in any case, the image in the country’s political scene on the night of the elections will be completely different.”

At the same time, several executives do not hide their concern about the final formation of the Euro-ballot, which they describe as a “ballot of internal settlements and the prevalence of mechanisms,” rather than a vehicle for further opening up of SYRIZA to society.
