Today in Lesvos for talks on infrastructure projects

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis returned yesterday from the EU Summit in Brussels and this morning is visiting Mytilene. His agenda entails talks with the locals, talks on arrivals of Turkish citizens utilising the favorable visa regime, and analysis of infrastructure projects. Saturday morning, Mr. Mitsotakis will meet with citizens at a café in Agios Dimitrios, in the following week he will inaugurate a section of the E65 highway axis, before heading for Lamia.

Mr. Mitsotakis’s agenda encircles frequent tours aiming towards achieving New Democracy’s electoral goal and measuring up to the 33.12% threshold of 2019.  The PM’s advisers have disclosed that Mistotakis program is expected to intensify following Easter heading towards the final stretch leading up to the European elections on June 9.

Within the government’s closed circle signs of a change in its political climate shaping previous periods applying pressures to the party are being closely observed. Freni Beleri’s candidacy was a possible catalyst where from Brussels Mr. Mitsotakis defended his choice, responding to criticism from both the left and the right. “Freni Beleri’s candidacy weighs heavy in symbolism, where I feel for all those who genuinely care about the rights of the Greek national minority do understand .”

Consolidation Trend

Metron Analysis poll carried out on behalf of Mega yesterday outlined the consolidation trend within New Democracy. The poll highlighted that the declining trend of the ruling party has decreased while gaining ground from both the right and the pool of undecided voters.

In terms of voting estimation, the ruling party stands at 32.3%, improving its performance by one percentage point compared to a previous survey by the same agency. While Kyriakos Velopoulos party Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) records a decline of approximately one percentage point with its voting estimation slightly above 8%. SYRIZA shows marginal increase and is clearly in second place with 15.4%, while PASOK continues to drop with a 12% voting estimation and a single-digit performance in voting intention. It’s worth noting that the survey also includes a percentage of undecided voters reaching 9%.

New Democracy sees the European elections as serious focusing on its best possible electoral preparation. At noon today the party’s electoral campaign committee will convene at the offices on Piraeus Street to discuss the electoral strategy and schedule tours within the country. Moreover, in the coming weeks, party delegations consisting of ministers, MPs, and party executives will take to the roads. For the coordination of these delegations, two highly experienced party executives, the Prime Minister’s advisor Giorgos Katsaounos and former president of ONNED Sakis Ioannidis, have taken on these duties as New Democracy’s electoral task force.
