Gaza Strip: Israeli tanks have reached the center of Rafah

The tanks are near the Al-Awda Hospital, a central landmark of Rafah

Newsroom May 28 12:42

Several Israeli tanks arrived a short while ago in the center of Rafah, a small town in the southern part of the Gaza Strip where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have taken refuge in recent months to avoid bombings in other areas of the enclave.

The tanks are near the Al-Awda Hospital, a central landmark of Rafah, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to Reuters.

It should be noted that Israel intensified its airstrikes on Rafah today, despite international outcry over the deadly bombing of a crowded displaced persons camp in the city on Sunday night, which led to an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Exclusive footage from Al Jazeera shows Israeli occupation tanks advancing further into the west of Rafah city.

The new airstrikes were launched amid international reactions to the bombing, which claimed the lives of 45 people and injured another 249, according to the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip. The bombing caused a fire that spread to tents. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the bombing as a “tragic accident.”

The Israeli military stated that it is conducting an investigation into the civilian deaths after initially announcing that it had targeted two Hamas officials with “precision munitions.”
