Conflict in Ukraine: Calls for Biden to authorize Kyiv to strike Russian territory using US weaponry

Concerns in the West about potential war escalation - More countries shifting their stance - Increasing threats from Moscow

Newsroom May 30 06:37

Pressure mounts on US President Joe Biden to permit Ukraine to use Western-supplied weapons against Russia. Allies have expressed their openness to this, amidst concerns of war escalation. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of serious consequences. Blinken adjusted the US stance, and while US support for Kyiv has evolved, the policy remains unchanged. Macron suggests allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons against Russian military targets. Some Western leaders have advocated for this, while others have urged caution and focused on providing air defenses to Ukraine. Denmark has offered      F-16s to strike Russian targets, as part of a larger military aid package where Russia reacted strongly. Ukraine is currently facing Russian attacks in the east, particularly in Kharkiv. Zelensky has deemed Western restrictions on weapons unfair but acknowledges Ukraine’s reliance on allies’ support.

Russia strongly opposes the use of Western weapons against its territory. Vladimir Putin warned European countries, especially the smaller ones, of the risks, emphasizing their ‘small territories’ and ‘dense populations’. He stated that Western allies would be responsible for any strikes within Russia by Ukrainian forces. There are beliefs that Ukraine has already used some Western-supplied weapons for attacks on Russian soil, though not officially acknowledged.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze mentioned that some countries have provided weapons to Ukraine ‘without conditions,’ but not all details have been disclosed. Recently, reports indicated that Ukrainian drones struck an early warning radar near Orsk, about 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
