Thriller in Schinias: “I came out of the sea and I heard them shouting ‘There is a dead man in the sea'” – What an eyewitness describes

"The diver pulled out the body, completely disfigured, bloated" - What the authorities are examining

Newsroom June 3 08:30

“I at that moment happened to come out of the swim I heard him shouting: ‘dead, dead’.” An eyewitness who saw the body floating in the sea of Schinias goes into chilling descriptions.

He describes what he experienced from the moment he spotted the dead man until the time when members of the Coast Guard arrived in the area.

A 10 kg dumbbell was tied to the victim’s leg. With the local resident approaching, assured that what he saw in the sea was indeed a man who had died, he alerted the authorities.

According to information received, the body, which was in a state of decomposition, belonged to a man aged between 40 and 45 years old. He had been at sea for more than 20 days. He had a distinctive tattoo on his body, which may help to identify him, and on his leg, a 10 kg dumbbell tied to his leg.

“It was a body which we then pulled out. A diver went in when the police and ambulances came. A diver went in, pulled it out, a completely disfigured body, bloated. It was not a good sight,” the eyewitness revealed to Mega.

“The man came out and I asked him, I said what is it? ‘It’s a man, probably a stranger’, so he said, and he has a rope tied to his leg,” he added.

“The gentleman who was in the canoe was shouting, I saw where he was shouting, I waved him over and he said he was dead. As soon as I got out of the sea I immediately called,” concludes the man who saw the body.

What are the authorities investigating?

The fact that the body was found with a 10-kilogram plumb bob strapped to the leg is the first clue that makes the experienced officers of the Homicide Department of the H.A.S. move in the direction of a savage crime.

A key point in the course of the investigation is to first identify the body and establish the cause of death of the man. That is, whether the victim was dead before he was found in the sea or drowned with a 10 kg weightlifting tray strapped to his leg.

The information that has been made known so far is that the man was aged about 40-50 years old, was wearing his clothes, specifically sports overalls, had a tattoo on his leg that may help in his identification and had light skin.

It also appears from the initial forensic examination that the death occurred several days ago perhaps even a month ago. This explains the fact that the body swelled and came to the surface despite the weight strapped to it.

One of the scenarios being considered is that the man was murdered and the perpetrators wanted to dispose of the body in this way, a practice that points to mafia methods.

It is recalled that the body in the sea area of Schinias in Marathon was noticed by a citizen, who alerted the authorities. Immediately mobilized the Coast Guard which rushed to the area. The body was retrieved by a diver and then taken by an ambulance vehicle of the ambulance and evacuated to the Athens General Hospital “Sotiria”.
