Isthmos: The bridge is being demolished – One-way traffic on Athens-Corinthos and “blockade” to trucks – Watch video

The bridge was damaged after the explosion of the tanker - See video and photos - How traffic is being conducted - Athens - Corinth closed for a few days at the point - An investigation is being carried out, said Chrysochoidis

Newsroom June 8 11:20

In full swing are the demolition works of the bridge in the Isthmus under which yesterday evening the tanker carrying fuel overturned and was engulfed in flames, resulting in drivers and firefighters on the New National Road Athens-Corinthos to experience a hell of fire for more than two hours.

Michael Chrysochoidis, who was at the scene, said that an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.

There are delays on the road to Corinth, as one section is closed due to demolition work on the airlift.

According to a new update from the Traffic Police, in order to facilitate citizens going to the region for the European elections and other citizens travelling, a lane was given to traffic from the opposite direction, for drivers moving in the direction of Corinth.

In particular, the road section that is being reversed starts just before the Loutraki junction and vehicles re-enter the normal traffic flow at about the height of Loutraki.

At the same time, in order to avoid traffic congestion continues in some places the diversion of vehicles to the Old National Road in the stream to Corinth.

Cranes are demolishing the tunnel

At first light, cranes are demolishing the tunnel where the accident occurred and, according to initial estimates, demolition will be completed by the middle of next week.

The operation to extricate vehicles on both streams of the new Athens-Corinth National Road has been completed.

The Minister of Civil Protection Michael Chrysochoidis and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras visited the site.

Closure of the road from Athens to Corinth

Due to the clearing works, the new National Road from Athens to Corinth will be closed at this point for a few days.

In the following hours, the traffic police will maintain the bypass to Corinth and until the early hours of Sunday noon, the uphill branch to Athens will be buffered, i.e. one lane to Isthmus, an intermediate buffer lane and two lanes to Athens.
