The Greek National Team made history in Belgrade

Newsroom June 14 06:59

The Greek synchronized swimming team celebrated its first gold medal in the history of the European Aquatic Championships in Belgrade. The national team secured first place in the free team final, making history despite the limited participation of only four countries. Before this victory, Greece had accumulated five silver and six bronze medals in the sport but had never reached the top of the podium.

The team also included Maria Alzigouzi-Kominea, Thalia Dambali, Athena Kamarinopoulou, Zoi Karangelou, Maria Karapanagiotou, Sofia Rigakou, and Vasiliki Thanou. The Greek gymnasts were the last to enter the water, having taken first place in the qualifier. Despite a strong performance from the young Italian team, they did not falter. They delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 270.1980 points and securing the top spot, about 15.5 points ahead of Italy, who scored 254.7354 points.

With the completion of the free team final, the artistic swimming events at the European Championships in Belgrade concluded. Greece finished with one gold and two silver medals (in the technical team and acrobatics events), placing fifth in the overall ranking.

Final results for the free team program:

  1. GREECE – 270.1980 points
  2. Italy – 254.7354 points
  3. Great Britain – 219.0228 points
