Exposing a €2 Million Money Laundering Scheme: Intercepted Prison Conversations Implicate Criminal Network in Ioannina

In one of the conversations, the Albanian "mastermind" of the organization talks to the deputy director about a "parcel" with a value of more than 2 million and from which he himself would "make" a million

Newsroom July 2 08:32

The dialogues of the members of the organization that laundered drug money in Ioannina’s prisons are revealing.

In one of the conversations, the Albanian “mastermind” of the organization talks to the deputy director about a “parcel” with a value of more than 2 million and from which he would “make” a million.

“A parcel to spend 100 kilos of coke man 1million net in the pocket… 2 million and I’ll sell 3, I’ll make 1 million,” he allegedly said.

The dialogue:

Assistant manager: Is Athens going to bring money? What money? Not some crazy amount?

Prisoner: He’s 21.

Administrative employee: Vasilis?

Assistant Director:
. 21; 21? …Not that much money. … Do you want him to bring it 2-2?, 3-3? 1,5-1,5; Give them a couple. Give the other guy a 1.5. Like this… They’ll say we’re legalizing…

Administrative employee: what are they going to tell us? There’s going to be a screw up up front, they’re going to do an audit here, and they’re going to get me tied up, son!…

Assistant manager: They’re going to get the money laundering authority…

In another conversation, the deputy director and prisoner talk about sums of money, and the deputy director tells him what to watch out for.

Prisoner: They’re going to bring me some money tomorrow for me…eight and a half, nine?

Assistant Warden: Catastrophe?

Prisoner: Thousands…

Assistant Director: Eight and a half thousand (8,500) don’t go in like that. They have to be brought five times.

Prisoner: Since two people are coming in, man. From four.

Assistant Warden: Don’t bullshit me. They look like it.

Prisoner.

Assistant Warden: But that’s money… When it’s a lot you have to provide proof. That it’s from banks and that … Let him bring two thousand (2,000), let him bring back two thousand (2,000).

In another dialogue with an administrative officer, the prisoner refers to the amount of 21,000 euros he expected to spend in prison, with the officer initially puzzled about the amount. They even had a disagreement, with the employee also referring to the accountant involved in the case

Prisoner: 21.

Administrative employee: What?

.
Prisoner: 21 (referring to the importation of 21,000€ within the Ioannina prison)

Administrative employee: what 21? Are you out of your mind?

Prisoner: Yes.

Administrative officer: You can’t do what you say … We’re going to jail. We’ll go to jail with this. If it was a little easy. We’ll go to jail. It’s too much. They’re not justified.

Prisoner: I don’t want you to justify it.

Administrative officer: are you all right, child? Where the fuck. Where do I put them? In my pants?

Prisoner: take it out…if you take the money, and put it somewhere? We won’t get caught…Hide it somewhere.

Administrative Officer: … You’re exposing me. You don’t care. She doesn’t care either (referring to the accountant).

The clerk and the accountant then confer about how to spend the money in jail.

Clerk: Okay, I was asked to bring the ones that were unwritten…uh…two commas something… (referring to the delivery of at least €2,000 in cash of the unaccounted-for monies held for the CEO within the CC) I’ll go and get it ha…put it in my pocket…

Accountant:I know them, I first of all, because I was waiting for them not (…) to see me…

.
Administrator: And he says to me (unintelligible), “Just a minute” he says to me because it was (unintelligible). And I go over, I give, I say “Take what you asked for” and he says “Just a minute.”
