Britain – Starmer’s First Statements in Downing Street: The Country Needs a Major Reboot

"We're going to ensure affordable energy, rebuild infrastructure, and give workers hope," said Starmer. Earlier, he was instructed by King Charles to form a government. Watch the video to see what he said

“We’re going to ensure you have affordable energy, we’re going to rebuild infrastructure, and we’re going to give workers hope,” said Keir Starmer in his first statements in Downing Street as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Earlier, he had been tasked with forming a government by King Charles.

Starmer’s Vision for Britain

In his speech, Starmer laid out his vision for a new Great Britain, emphasizing cheap energy and the creation of many new jobs. He expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, acknowledging his historic achievement as Britain’s first Asian Prime Minister and recognizing his hard work and dedication.

“The country voted decisively for change, renewal, and the return of politics to the public interest,” Starmer said. “When the gap between politics and citizens widens, faith, spirit, and vision for a better future are lost.”

Starmer continued, “We must move together, healing wounds with actions, not words. Every citizen should be treated with honor and respect. Whether you voted for us or not, we will serve the common good. Politics can be a force for good, and we will demonstrate this. We have changed the Labour Party, and returned it to leadership, and this is how we will govern: country first, party second. Our nation needs a significant reboot. Change does not happen overnight, but the work will begin immediately. We will put the country back on its feet for the future, ensuring everyone is treated with respect. We’re going to ensure you have affordable energy, we’re going to rebuild infrastructure, and we’re going to give workers and families hope to rebuild their lives.”

Addressing National Stability and Change

Starmer emphasized the importance of recognizing when to change direction: “One of the great strengths of this nation has always been our ability to navigate calmer waters. It is up to politicians, especially those who support stability and moderation like myself, to recognize when we need to change course. For too long, we have ignored the insecurity of millions. From now on, you have a government free of dogma, driven solely by a determination to serve your interests.”

“You have given us a clear mandate, and we will use it to bring about change. To restore service and respect to politics and unite our country. Four nations standing united again. Facing, as we have often done in the past, the challenges of an uncertain world. Committed to a calm and patient rebuild. So, I respectfully and humbly invite you all to join this government of service, in the mission of national renewal. Our work is urgent, and we are starting it today. Thank you very much.”

Forming the New Government

Following his speech, Starmer entered his Downing Street offices to discuss with aides the composition of the new cabinet, details of which are expected to be announced later this afternoon.

Appointment by King Charles

Earlier, Keir Starmer was at Buckingham Palace where accompanied by his wife, he met with King Charles and was officially appointed as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following his landslide victory in the recent election. Charles invited him to proceed with forming the country’s next government.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Starmer’s appointment with the following statement: “The King today received the Honorable Sir Keir Starmer MP and asked him to form a new government. Sir Keir has accepted His Majesty’s offer of appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”

At 61, the former lawyer specializing in human rights, who entered politics just nine years ago, has become Britain’s seventh Prime Minister from the Labour Party.
