The referendum of December 8, 1974 definitively resolved the constitutional issue in Greece, with a decisive outcome: 69% in favor of the republic and only 31% supporting the monarchy.

The role of Konstantinos Karamanlis, who led a party divided on the issue of the monarchy, was pivotal. King Constantine II waited in vain for Karamanlis to call him back to Greece, and Karamanlis did not allow him to conduct his pre-election campaign from Greek territory, despite granting him television airtime.

Following these events, trials were conducted for the instigators of the coup d’état, as well as for the torturers who had acted during the junta.
