Four students of the Department of Mathematics have won high distinctions in an international competition

Greece in 6th place out of 77 countries

A top performance of the Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was noted in an international mathematics competition.

The Department of Mathematics of the University of Athens participated with a team of four students in the 31st IMC (International Mathematics Competition), held on August 7 and 8 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. 401 students in 77 teams from 42 countries participated in this event.

Students Giorgos Georgeles, Dimitris Emmanuel, Manolis Petrakis each won a gold medal while Themelis Mamouzelos won a silver medal.

Each student participated in the competition individually. In the informal ranking of the teams, the team of the Department of Mathematics ranked 6th out of 77, recording the best team performance that the N.C.P.A. has had in this competition so far.

Since 2007 the participation of the N.C.P.A. in the International Mathematics Competition (IMC)

The IMC is the largest global mathematics competition for students, organized since 1994 by University College London, and involving leading universities in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Students compete for two days, having to solve 5 problems each day in 5 hours.

Within the framework of the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) students are ensured a highly supportive environment for the participants to meet the extremely high level of the mathematical problems. At the same time, they have the opportunity to interact with peers from all corners of the globe and explore international career prospects in the field.

It is noted that the competition remains neutral towards political controversies and wars, promotes diversity and inclusion, rejects any kind of discrimination and fosters mutual respect and a spirit of cooperation among the students taking part in it.

The students of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Athens have been participating in the competition since the academic year 2007-08 until today, having significant successes every year, which are a testimony to the level of studies of the University and the quality of its students.
