Ilia: Over 300 kg of gunpowder & weapons hidden in the house of a 73-year-old man

Among the recovered weapons all of which appear to be functional were two antique rifles dating back to WWII

Newsroom August 30 11:40

A large quantity of powerful explosives, equivalent to 100 kilograms of TNT, weapons, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were found by police officers of the Assafety Ilida in the home of a deceased man in the municipal community of Peristeri.

The detection of the war material took place last Wednesday morning, as part of a formal procedure, as due to the lack of relatives, the house had to be sealed.

However, police officers from the Elis Police Department who went to the Ilida Pigeon House were confronted with an entire arsenal.

Police believe that the 73-year-old, who passed away last Monday, was a collector of war material, much of which he seems to have inherited from his father, who was an officer in the Greek army, a fact that is also linked to the appropriate decoration of the house.

The deceased, however, seems to have not been involved in any illegal activity in the past and it is speculated that the huge quantity of 305 kilograms of gunpowder found in his home was intended for the possibility of a military conflict, which he himself may have feared.

In fact, among the recovered weapons, all of which appear to be functional, were two antique war rifles dating back to the World War II era.

More specifically, during searches at the house of the 73-year-old man in Ilida’s Peristeri, police officers of the Ilida Security Department, who carefully searched the house because of the explosives, found and seized 305 kilograms of gunpowder, seven hunting guns, parts of an old automatic firearm with five magazines, 235 hunting cartridges and 65 war rifle cartridges.

In addition, the search in the house was carried out in the presence of a competent pyrotechnic expert of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department of Patras. The seized objects will be sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for laboratory tests.
