Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Meeting on the National Health System (ESY), hospitals, and doctor support

Detailed announcements from Adonis Georgiadis tomorrow – The National Health System (ESY) and its reforms are a key focus on the government's agenda until 2027

Newsroom September 10 11:34

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is currently holding a meeting at Maximou with the leadership of the Ministry of Health to discuss the reform goals for the National Health System over the next three years, as the transformation of ESY is a central political priority for the government.

On the agenda of the meeting is also the specification of measures to enhance the incomes of hospital workers, which the Prime Minister announced during his speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). Tomorrow, Wednesday, Adonis Georgiadis is expected to give a related press conference.

It is worth noting that the government has announced that overtime pay in ESY will be taxed at a flat rate of 22%, while it has also introduced financial incentives for doctors in remote areas, which will be supplemented by institutional measures.

“In response to a long-standing demand from ESY doctors, overtime pay in ESY will be taxed at a flat rate of 22%, which will increase doctors’ average earnings by 130 euros, sometimes even more. I should also mention that a joint ministerial decision has been signed, providing significant additional financial support — up to 7,200 euros annually — for doctors staffing health facilities in remote areas. This is our practical response to the real issues of the country, leaving others to blind protests and easy impressions,” Mitsotakis said in his TIF speech.

Key goals for the coming period include progress in the renovation work of several hospital and health center facilities, improvements to emergency departments, and staff hirings, such as paramedics, aimed at significantly reducing patient waiting times.

As the Prime Minister mentioned at TIF, “By 2027, this country will have renovated 156 health centers, 93 hospitals, and dozens of new emergency departments. It will have more doctors.”

In the near future, European funding will also be unlocked to provide 37,000 free afternoon surgeries for those who have been waiting months or even years for an operation.
