Istanbul: How a Taxi Driver Identified the 78-Year-Old Greek – A Story of Exceptional Turkish-Greek Cooperation

"He lost his way," said Ambassador Konstantinos Koutras, Consul General of Greece in Istanbul

Newsroom September 13 07:30

A day of great joy was described today by the Consul General of  Ambassador Konstantinos Koutras, as Dimitris Papadimitriou, whose fate had been missing since September 5, was found and reunited with his family.

Addressing representatives of the press and in the presence of the 78-year-old pensioner from Kozani, his son and granddaughter, Ambassador Koutras said “It is a great emotion for all of us, first of all for the family, his son, and granddaughter, with whom we have been in contact from the first moment, but also for all those people from Greece who were worried and sent us letters and wrote to us in social networks” as all this effort has finally been completed.

The Consul General of Greece clarified that today he was recognized by a taxi driver, who took him to a cafe, and from the cafe a phone call was made to the Greek Consulate in Istanbul.

Ambassador Koutras praised the collaboration with the Turkish police stating that although Mr. Papadimitrious was being tracked, his excellent physical condition made it difficult to catch up with him.

Consulate officials, Lena Katzi and Eleni Karamiti, were in daily communication, around the clock, with police, who showed them images from cameras and followed Mr. Papadimitrious each movement.

“He lost his bearings. The bottom line is that he was found. That is the important thing,” expressed Ambassador Koutras, adding that Mr. Papadimitriou will return home by plane in the coming days, accompanied by his son and granddaughter.
