Harvey Weinstein diagnosed with bone marrow cancer

Harvey Weinstein, the former film producer currently imprisoned and awaiting trial for sexual crimes, has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer

Newsroom October 22 10:45

The 72-year-old is serving his sentence while preparing for a retrial scheduled for November 12, after his 2020 conviction was overturned. In that trial, Weinstein had been found guilty of rape, but in April this year, New York’s Court of Appeals annulled the conviction, ruling that he did not receive a fair trial. The court argued that the judge had mistakenly allowed testimonies from women who had accused Weinstein but for whose cases no charges were filed.

According to Weinstein’s spokesperson, who spoke to the New York Post, the cancer diagnosis came earlier this month, though no further details were provided. The spokesperson expressed dismay, calling it “tragic” that such serious health issues are being discussed publicly, and clarified that they have no intention of making further statements on the matter.

“It’s disturbing and unacceptable that such private and confidential health issues have become a topic of public discussion. Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will not provide any further comment,” the statement said.

However, sources close to Weinstein revealed that he is suffering from bone marrow cancer, also known as myelogenous leukemia. They added that he is currently undergoing treatment while in prison at Rikers Island in New York.
