Marinakis criticizes Samaras and PASOK: Unity, accountability, and fiscal responsibility

Government spokesperson highlights Karamanlis’ unifying message and calls out PASOK for unfounded promises

Newsroom November 23 07:58

The Government Spokesperson on Samaras’ Expulsion
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis characterized the expulsion of Antonis Samaras as “unpleasant but necessary,” emphasizing that criticism must not devolve into personal attacks. “Karamanlis delivered a calm and unifying speech, expressing well-known views, while promoting the need for unity, something with which I agree,” Marinakis stated in an interview on Mega TV.

Marinakis contrasted Karamanlis’ constructive tone with what he described as insults from Samaras. “Criticism, even sharp criticism, does not require disciplinary measures,” he explained. “However, calling someone a traitor or accusing the Greek Prime Minister or the President of Cyprus of fraternizing goes beyond criticism. Unfortunately, such remarks inevitably lead to disciplinary action, as they threaten unity.”

He further noted that a week after the expulsion, the decision was broadly supported by the government and parliamentary members, signaling the need to move forward decisively.

Marinakis on PASOK: No Money Grows on Trees
Marinakis also criticized PASOK, accusing it of following SYRIZA’s populist playbook. He labeled PASOK as the “Green SYRIZA” for making unfounded promises, such as the €4 billion proposed by its leader Nikos Androulakis.

“The main issue is where the money will come from. Androulakis either lacks basic knowledge of European fiscal rules or is deliberately misleading,” Marinakis said. “The Mid-Term Fiscal Plan prohibits such proposals unless they are funded through measures like reducing wages, benefits, or raising taxes—none of which Androulakis has clarified.”

He added, “After exceeding tax evasion targets, Greece secured an additional 3.7% fiscal flexibility, which can only be used for tax reductions. Androulakis has failed to specify where these funds will come from, showcasing the same tactics SYRIZA used, only with a different color.”
