A vast gateway for Attica to the sea, featuring spaces for recreation and culture, pools, sports fields, and modern facilities capable of hosting various activities like concerts and cultural or sporting events, was how Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the redevelopment of the Faliron Bay area. Speaking at an event organized by the Attica Region at the Water Plaza, he highlighted the significance of the project.

He referred to it as a unique destination, not only for Attica but for the entire Mediterranean, comparing it to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the coastal promenade. This promenade, he added, aspires to connect Piraeus with Voula and Sounio.

Prime Minister’s Address

The Prime Minister noted the climate considerations of the project, referencing recent catastrophic events like the floods caused by Storm Daniel and the severe storms in Spain. He emphasized the importance of modern infrastructure, such as drainage networks and green spaces, which can transform the microclimate of the area.

The redevelopment project, funded by the EU, also bears his personal involvement. He revealed that he played an active role in resolving issues at the European level, a task he acknowledged was not easy.

Addressing citizens’ skepticism regarding the completion of similar projects, the Prime Minister urged them to trust the government. “Just as the citizens of Thessaloniki trusted us, and the fully operational metro is being delivered to them soon, trust us with this project too,” he stated.

“We have proven that we turn plans into construction sites. This project bears my personal imprint as I worked on its unblocking at the European level. We expect the project to be contracted by 2025, and by 2028, well before the next regional elections, we aim to inaugurate this landmark development for Attica,” said Mitsotakis.

Hardalias: Metropolitan Park Named “Aenaon”

Attica Regional Governor Giorgos Hardalias called it a “touching moment” and a “day of vindication for Attica.” He announced that the Metropolitan Park will be named “Aenaon,” symbolizing continuity and perpetuity.

Hardalias emphasized that the park will be open with free access to all, offering spaces for cultural and sporting events as well as light commercial use. He highlighted the park’s metropolitan character, calling it a “landmark project.”

He also announced that following Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ intervention, ETAD has transferred the Tae Kwon Do Arena and Water Plaza to the Attica Region for the next 40 years.

This ambitious project aims to transform Attica’s seafront into a vibrant space for culture, recreation, and environmental sustainability.

The European Commission has approved an initial €93 million from the Cohesion Fund to support the redevelopment of a 540-hectare coastal park along Faliro Bay. This investment will transform the city’s waterfront into a green and vibrant space accessible to all.

The Metropolitan Park is an iconic project of the New European Bauhaus, a model of excellence for public investments, not only for Greece but for all of Europe. It harmoniously integrates people and nature, citizens and their environment.

This project sets a new benchmark for ecological restoration in a densely populated and degraded area. Its innovative design, inspired aesthetics, extensive tree planting, and rich natural restoration will not only enhance biodiversity but also provide the city with a green lung—a pleasant communal space for the people of Athens.
