Weather: New updated EMY weather forecast – Heavy rain, lightning and hail

Which areas are affected

Stable weather is expected for most parts of the country today, with locally heavy showers and thunderstorms accompanied by a high frequency of lightning and localized hail.

According to the updated Emergency Weather Bulletin, bad weather will hit today:

a) In the Dodecanese islands in intervals until the afternoon.

b) On the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean Sea from noon until the early hours of Sunday (08-12-2024).

c) In the Ionian Sea until the afternoon.

d) In Epirus until noon.

e) In western Central Greece until afternoon.

f) In the western Peloponnese from noon to evening.

g) In Macedonia (mainly in eastern Macedonia) from midday until the afternoon.

η) In Thrace from midday until the early hours of Sunday (08-12-2024).

Stable weather until Tuesday

According to the forecast of Giannis Kallianos, the phenomena will continue until Monday and Tuesday, almost throughout the country, with occasional rainfall of weak to moderate intensity.

The strongest storms will occur in areas of Western Greece and the Eastern Aegean, including the long-suffering Rhodes, without excluding the possibility of flooding.

In fact, late on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning there is a possibility of a strong storm in Attica.

Significant rainfall yesterday morning in Attica

Rain and local thunderstorms occurred in the morning hours of Friday 06/12 in Attica where locally significant rainfall has been recorded. According to the recordings in the network of automatic weather stations of meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens, the highest rainfall in Attica until 09:00 on Friday 06/12 has been recorded at the weather station in Papagos with 70 mm. The map below shows the cumulative rainfall recorded by the network of meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens automatic weather stations in the greater Attica area until 09:00 on Friday 06/12.

The weather today

Showers and thunderstorms are expected across most of the country. The phenomena in the west and in the eastern Aegean will have longer duration and intensity in places. Thunderstorms in the southern Ionian and Aegean are likely to be accompanied by small hailstorms. A transport of Saharan dust is expected in the south.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 3 to 11 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Northern Greece from 2 to 14-15 degrees Celsius, in Thessaly from 3 to 13-14 degrees Celsius, in Epirus from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, in the rest of the mainland from 4 to 17 degrees Celsius, in the Ionian Islands from 11 to 14-16 degrees Celsius, in the North Aegean islands from 9 to 15-16 degrees Celsius and in the rest of the Aegean islands and in Crete from 10 to 19-20 degrees Celsius.

In the Aegean Sea the winds will be generally south-southwest with intensities up to 5-6 Beaufort. In the southern Ionian Sea, southwestern winds will initially blow with intensities of up to 4-5 and possibly up to 6 Beaufort, while gradually after the afternoon hours they will shift to northwestern winds and weaken significantly. In the North Ionian Sea the winds will blow northwest, initially with intensities up to 3-4 Beaufort, gradually weakening.

SUNDAY 08-12-2024
Initially in eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the Cyclades, the eastern Aegean islands and Crete, from early noon in the Ionian Sea and the western mainland and gradually in the Dodecanese and the rest of the mainland local rain and occasional thunderstorms. The phenomena will be locally strong in the northeast until noon and possibly later in the Dodecanese and western Greece.
Some snow will fall in the mountains of Epirus and Macedonia.
In the rest of the country a few clouds, partly cloudy with local rain and a possibility of isolated thunderstorms.
Winds will blow from the south southwest 4 to 6 Beaufort, and in the sea occasionally locally 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will show a slight increase in maximum values throughout the country. It will reach 15 to 16 degrees Celsius in the northern and central mainland, 19 degrees Celsius in the rest of the mainland and the Ionian Sea, 20 to 21 degrees Celsius in the rest of the island country and 22 degrees Celsius locally in the southern Dodecanese and southern Crete.

MONDAY 09-12-2024
In the Ionian Sea, the western mainland, Thrace and the eastern Aegean, showers and occasional thunderstorms. The phenomena are likely to be strong in places. In the rest of the country a few clouds, occasionally increasing with local showers.
Snow will fall in the mountains of Epirus, Macedonia and in the morning in the mountains of Sterea.
Winds will blow south-southwest 4 to 6 and in the Aegean Sea 7 and until noon locally 8 Beaufort.
The temperature will drop slightly in the west.

TUESDAY 10-12-2024
In the Ionian Sea, the western mainland and the northeastern Aegean clouds with local showers and occasional thunderstorms. The phenomena may be strong at times in the northeast. In the rest of the country, a few clouds at times increasing with local rain mainly from the afternoon in Thessaly and the Sporades.
A little snow will fall in the mountains of Epirus, Macedonia and Sterea.
Winds will blow from southerly directions 3 to 5 Beaufort and in the central and southern Aegean Sea locally 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly.
