The dish that tops the list is the Colombian lechona. It is a stuffed pig with onions, peas, rice, fresh herbs and spices. It is a traditional dish of the country and the execution involves roasting for a long time to make the meat tender and juicy. The Colombians prepare it during celebrations and festivals.

Greece is found in 16th place on the Taste Atlas list with chops. “Grilled lamb chops is a traditional Greek dish that is popular throughout the country and is usually eaten as a main course. They are usually marinated in various combinations of olive oil, lemon juice and various fresh herbs before being grilled on traditional charcoal grills. They are combined with potatoes, salads or tzatziki,” says Taste Atlas.

The second and final Greek entry is in 57th place on the list. It is kleftiko which “is a typical Greek dish usually prepared at festive events and celebrations, consisting of a juicy piece of lamb or goat meat wrapped in foil and baked in closed ovens. The name comes from the Kleftes, the mountain rebels of the Greek Revolution, who cooked the food under the fire so that no flavours or vapours escaped as they could reveal their positions. Today, meat is cooked slowly in bowls to keep it juicy and to separate it from the bone.”

The 10 best foods:

  1. Lechona (Colombia): stuffed pig
  2. Napolitana pizza (Italy)
  3. Picania (Brazil): quilotto
  4. Rechta (Algeria): Noodles with chicken and vegetables
  5. Phanaeng (Thailand): pork with curry
  6. Asanto (Argentina): a variety of grilled meats
  7. Chokertme kebab (Turkey)
  8. Rawon (Indonesia): beef soup
  9. Cag kebab (Turkey)
  10. Tibs (Ethiopia): beef stir fry
