The weather landscape in Greece is changing, as, in contrast to the sunshine so far, rain and thundery winds are forecast by the National Weather Service for the next few days.
More specifically, showers and occasional strong thunderstorms in places in the western Peloponnese, the southernmost islands of the Ionian (Kefalonia-Zakynthos area), central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the eastern Aegean (mainly Samos-Icaria), the Dodecanese and Crete (mainly western and southern). Westerly gusty winds will blow in western and southern Greece.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
Increased clouds with showers and occasional strong thunderstorms in some places are forecasted all over the country.
Snowfall will occur in the mountains of the mainland until the afternoon.
Winds will blow west southwest 5 to 7 and in the sea locally 8 Beaufort, turning initially in the west and north and gradually in the rest to northwest with the same intensity. Gradual weakening is expected from the evening hours.
The temperature will drop in most areas and will not exceed 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in the north, while it will reach 15 to 17 degrees Celsius in other areas and 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.
Monday, December 23
In the eastern and southern islands of the country, cloudy spells with local rain are forecast. In the rest of the country, clouds with showers and occasional thunderstorms are forecast, initially in the west and north and gradually in the rest of the country. The phenomena will be strong in the west and after the afternoon in some places in eastern regions.
Snowfall will occur in the central and northern mountainous areas, possibly dense in the northwest.
Winds will blow west southwest and gradually in the Aegean Sea south southwest 4 to 6 and gradually in the sea 7 to 8 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly, mainly in its maximum values. In the morning and evening hours, frost will occur in the northwestern continental areas.
Tuesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve)
Cloudy with local showers and mainly in the eastern and southern islands and the southern Ionian Sea sporadic thunderstorms, possibly strong at times. The phenomena from the midday hours in the Ionian Sea and the mainland and gradually in the rest of the regions will weaken and in the evening hours in the north will stop.
Snowfall will occur in the mountains of the mainland.
Winds will blow south southwest 5 to 7 and in the Aegean Sea locally 8 Beaufort, which will quickly shift to west northwest 4 to 6 and in the Ionian Sea locally 7 Beaufort in the west and north. From the afternoon the winds will gradually weaken.
The temperature will drop, mainly in the west and north. In the morning and evening hours frost will occur in some places in the northwestern continents.
Christmas Day forecast
In the north, partly cloudy with some local rain and in the mountains light snowfall. In the remaining areas cloudy with local rain and mainly in the southern maritime – coastal parts isolated thunderstorms, while there will be some snowfall in the mountains of the mainland, Crete and Evia.
The winds will initially blow north-northwest at 3 to 5 Beaufort and gradually north-northeast winds, which will increase to 6 to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.
The temperature will drop further and will not exceed 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in the central and northern regions and 14 to 16 degrees Celsius in the southern regions. In the morning and evening hours, frost will occur in the northern continental areas.
