Newsroom January 31 05:30

The Municipal Police of Athens is carrying out extensive checks on compliance with the provisions of the Road Traffic Code (KOK) in the city center every day, as part of the municipal authorities’ commitment to freeing up public space and ensuring full accessibility on sidewalks and pedestrian streets.

The “numbers” that emerge are far from positive when it comes to citizen behavior, as in a 12-day period (from January 13 to January 24), 5,270 violations were recorded. The policing plan focused particularly on the following streets and areas: Amerikis, Akadimias, Sekeri, Solonos, Acharon, Patision, Kolonaki, G’ Septemvriou, Aristotelous, Panormou, Pagrati / Mets, Charilaou Trikoupi, Hippokratous, Athinas, Ermou, University, Stadium, Aiolou, Filhellinon, Amalias, and Piraeus.

Of these violations, 44% were for vehicles parked on sidewalks and pedestrian streets. Specifically, 583 violations were for parking at corners, 217 for parking on pedestrian crossings, 100 for double parking, 2,119 for parking on sidewalks, and 209 for parking on pedestrian streets. Another 1,895 were for parking in areas where stopping and parking is prohibited (P-40), and 147 were for completely antisocial parking on accessible ramps for people with disabilities.

In total, in 2024, the Municipal Police recorded 471,785 violations of the Road Traffic Code, of which 4,706 concerned antisocial parking (blocking accessible ramps and parking spaces for people with disabilities). In 16,625 cases, vehicle registration details and/or driving licenses were removed.

Regarding the prevention of illegal parking, the Municipal Police has permanent teams to ensure smooth vehicle circulation and decongestion of roads around Syntagma, Monastiraki, Omonia, and Karaiskaki squares. Policing actions on the streets of Athens will continue with the aim of enhancing traffic safety and accessibility to the city’s public spaces.
