Disasters caused by the bad weather in Kefalonia: Flooded roads, landslides and villages “drowned” by the rain

High rainfall in the southern part of the island, a "vast" lake was formed in the plain of Peratata - "The rainfall was unprecedented", says a villager - Serious problems face the road Poros - Skala

Newsroom February 14 10:00

Severe bad weather has been affecting Kefalonia for the past 24 hours, causing problems on the island’s road network, where landslides have occurred and property damage to homes.

Southern Kefalonia, centered on the area of Livtha, is facing heavy rainfall that has been hitting the island continuously since Thursday night.

Weather stations located in various areas of the island recorded significant rainfall levels by 6:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon:

– Lassi, Argostoli: 145mm
– Kipouria, Paliki: 131mm
– Skala – Poros: 110mm

The most significant problems were identified in Poros, Karousa, Vlahata, Peratata and several areas of Lievathi.

An “immense” lake was formed in the plain of Peratata, in the area of the Monastery of Agios Andreas Milapidia, after the severe bad weather that hit Kefalonia. The heavy rainfall turned fields and roads into watery areas, while the fire brigade battled with the waters that flooded yards and houses.

Authorities are monitoring the development of the phenomena, and a warning has already been issued for a possible further deterioration of the weather in the coming hours.

The severe weather conditions have caused serious problems for the road network in Livhatha, travel and infrastructure in the area. Residents were trapped in cars, while many drivers remained stranded for hours trying to leave the area, according to kefaloniapress.

The village of Mouchino in South Koutsoia is located in the southern part of South Koutsoia. Meanwhile, on the road to the Port of Poros, there is a serious risk of the railings giving way due to soil erosion. In Metaxata, yards and at least two houses have been flooded.

There are reports that houses in Peratata have also been flooded.

Authorities have issued recommendations to residents and visitors to avoid traveling unless there is absolutely no reason to do so due to the dangerous conditions.

Drivers and residents are advised to be particularly careful as the continued flow of water may cause localised flooding and traffic difficulties.

INFORMATION FROM THE REGIONAL UNIT OF KEFALINIA

“Since the afternoon we had a storm with heavy rainfall which caused mostly damage to the road network and to households . Immediate was our intervention with machinery throughout the provincial road network, especially in the area of Karouza and Vlahaton on the provincial network Argostoli – Poros . For this reason the movement of vehicles from the afternoon and evening route of f/b via Kyllini was routed through Tzanata and Sami . The road is now open but needs special attention because of the debris . From the storm we have had significant damage ( those recorded so far ) , on the road Poros – Skala in the area of limenia . At the bridge at the junction of Venetian , Trapazaki , in Perata , in Calligata- Tomato , in Omalas on the road of Fagia . Police forces guard these points , as well as police the entire road network of the area . The fire brigade was on household availability . The public crews on the road. So were volunteer groups from the area. The PE KEFALINIAS currently has 12 machines which clean various parts of the road network and will continue tomorrow with cleanings and the transport of debris . Our cooperation with the Mayor and Deputy Mayors very good. The schools with the Mayor’s decision tomorrow will operate normally“.

According to kefaloniapress, when the bad weather broke out, the situation quickly got out of control. One third of Kefalonia, the most populated part of the island, was cut off from the rest of the region. The main provincial roads were either flooded or blocked by landslides.

– Krania Street became a river. Access to Argostoli was impossible.
– The road Poros – Skala was closed. Mud and stones made it impassable.
– The provincial road Argostoli – Poros was cut in two at Karouza.
– People arriving from Kyllini were forced to go via Sami to Argostoli.

Fire Brigade at the front of the flood

The heavy rains caused overflowing streams and drainage networks, leading to extensive damage. Firefighters were called in to retrieve water from homes while local residents tried to protect their properties from flooding.

“The water almost reached inside the house. We were trying to contain it with everything we had, but the intensity of the rain was unprecedented,” said a resident of the area, expressing anguish over the damage to many homes.
