Archaeological findings from the Roman period found on a plot of land where a school will be built in Patras – See photos

Every effort is made to combine the protection of antiquities and the execution of the technical work, said the director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia, Anastasia Koumousi

Newsroom February 18 07:09

Archaeological finds were discovered during works for the construction of the 12th municipal school Patras.

According to information from “Peloponnisos”, in the plot where the school is to be built, opposite Voud Square, building remains dating back to the Roman period have been uncovered. The discovery was made by the excavations being carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities Achaia at the site.

According to the director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia, Anastasia Koumousi, “during the excavation, antiquities dating to the Roman period have been found. Recent rainfall has unfortunately delayed the progress of the excavation, due to the type of soil that holds moisture. This makes the excavation very difficult, even prohibitive. For this reason, the Ephorate will proceed immediately to test cuts using a machine and a specialized operator, within the contour of the basement of the school, for possible detection of antiquities at great depth.”

“As in all public projects, in which the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia implements excavation sub-projects, every effort is made to combine the protection of antiquities and the execution of the technical work,” he added.
