History was made in Apeldoorn as Emmanouil Karalis secured his first gold medal at the European Indoor Championships

Newsroom March 9 08:02

The Greek pole vaulter cleared 5.90m, sharing the top spot with Menno Vloon from the Netherlands after both athletes failed at 5.95m and agreed not to go into a jump-off. Sondre Guttormsen of Norway also cleared 5.90m but took bronze due to more failed attempts.

Karalis delivered an impressive performance, skipping 5.45m, clearing 5.60m on his first attempt, and effortlessly passing 5.80m. Despite two failed attempts at 5.85m, he succeeded on the third, followed by a successful 5.90m clearance. His three misses at 5.95m didn’t matter, as he had already secured gold.

This triumph completes Karalis’ medal collection after silver medals at the 2023 and 2024 European Championships and bronze at the 2024 Olympics. Now, as European champion, the Greek star has cemented his place among the continent’s elite!
