EKPA Professor requests removal of “De Grèce” surname and citizenship from former royal family

A professor from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) has filed a petition with the Council of State (StE) to revoke both the "De Grèce" surname and Greek citizenship from members of the former royal family

Newsroom March 20 06:27

Professor Panagiotis Lazaratos from the EKPA Law School argues that granting the surname and citizenship creates an implicit inequality among Greek citizens, thereby affecting his personal status as a Greek national.

In his request for annulment, Lazaratos contends that individuals registered in the Athens municipal rolls and electoral lists illegitimately hold Greek citizenship due to the unlawful attribution of the surname. He further claims that this allows them to participate in elections, thereby influencing political outcomes and violating the principle of popular sovereignty.

The professor cites Greek constitutional provisions, emphasizing that the abolition of the monarchy should prevent former royals and their descendants from retaining titles linked to their past political status. According to his petition, maintaining such titles undermines democratic principles and societal cohesion, while also posing a risk of reviving political disputes.
