Triantopoulos to appear before the Pre-Investigation Committee on Monday – PASOK, SYRIZA, KKE, New Left withdraw from the vote

Christos Triantopoulos, the former Deputy Minister, will appear before the Pre-Investigation Committee on Monday to provide explanations regarding his actions. The committee has decided by a majority to pursue criminal charges against him for the offense of dereliction of duty and refer him to the Judicial Council

Newsroom March 20 06:33

According to reports, the committee is expected to summon the former deputy minister for questioning at a meeting on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 10 AM. Afterward, political parties will have approximately 10 days to prepare their reports, and the final report will be presented in the Plenary session within the first two weeks of April for the final vote.

The report is expected to propose charges of dereliction of duty, and if it is approved by at least 151 MPs – which is highly likely – Triantopoulos will be referred to the Judicial Council. The composition of the 5-member judicial council will be determined by random selection.

According to the majority’s proposal, which was approved by vote, the evidence in the prosecutor’s order regarding the alteration of the railway accident site is sufficient to bring charges against Triantopoulos. MPs from New Democracy cited the PASOK proposal for the formation of the Pre-Investigation Committee, which suggested that Triantopoulos would already have been charged by the competent prosecutor if he were a private individual and not a government member, as the evidence is adequate.

It should be noted that opposition parties, except for the Spartans and the Freedom Sailing party, withdrew from the vote to avoid legitimizing what they called the “anti-institutional” decisions of the majority.

From PASOK, Milena Apostolaki argued that the majority’s proposal harms the function and credibility of the institutions. She accused the majority of attempting to bypass the preliminary investigation process and directly refer Triantopoulos to the interrogation stage, violating the Constitution.

Apostolaki insisted on the need to preserve the criminal jurisdiction within the Parliament and appeared to describe the transformation of PASOK’s proposal for the formation of the Pre-Investigation Committee into a proposal for criminal charges as “manipulation.”

Vasilis Kokkalis from SYRIZA spoke of an “absolute degradation” of the Constitution and the law. “They rejected the witnesses we proposed, starting with the Prime Minister. Selectively, and contrary to the law, they are summoning Triantopoulos for explanations. We abstained from the vote in this mock process,” he noted.
