Beleris: European Court of Justice accepts the request to examine irregularities in his arrest and detention

ECtHR sets 26 June as the deadline for the MEP of ND and the Albanian government to come to an out-of-court settlement

Newsroom April 7 05:50

The Fredis Belleris has been granted a positive ruling on his request for a review of irregularities observed during his arrest and detention two days before the municipal elections in Himara, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled

According to the briefing from Beleri’s side, the EHRC sets June 26 as the deadline for the New Democracy MP and the Albanian government to come to an out-of-court settlement. If not reached, the two sides will be invited to present their arguments before the Court.

It is worth noting that at the preliminary ruling stage of the European Court of Human Rights, the overwhelming majority of similar requests are rejected.

The MEP for the SW and EPP said: “The preliminary ruling of the European Court of Human Rights, which in principle finds my appeal against my illegal detention two days before the municipal elections in Himara to be valid, is a first, but at the same time a great vindication. Justification for my firm belief in the European acquis and democracy. Justification for the methods used against me and against the will of the Greek ethnic minority. Justice, finally, for those who continue to fight for the rule of law and institutions in Albania under accession. I thank my attorney, Professor Nikos Alivizatos, who, with his team handled the case. Today, the beginning has been made to regain what we have democratically gained and what we were deprived of by coups.”
