Axios revelation: Trump’s envoy Whitcoff is in Moscow – He will meet with Putin

The US president intensifies pressure for a ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine

Newsroom April 11 10:48

Donald Trump‘s envoy for diplomatic affairs, Steve Whitcoff, has traveled to Russia and is expected to meet with Vladimir Putin on Friday, Axios revealed today, citing a source with knowledge of the mission and data from the FlightRadar platform.

According to the US site, this will be the third meeting between Whitcoff and Putin as Trump steps up pressure to reach a ceasefire agreement in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Recall that Trump has expressed frustration at the lack of significant progress in the negotiations in recent weeks and, according to Axios, at one point said he was “angry” about statements Putin made about Ukraine.

If there is no agreement on a ceasefire by the end of the month, Trump may move to impose new sanctions against Russia, either by executive action or by asking Congress to pass legislation, a source with knowledge of the matter tells Axios.

“We will know very soon, in a few weeks, whether Russia is serious about peace negotiations or not,” Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said last week on the sidelines of the NATO meeting in Brussels.

Last week, Vitkov received Putin’s envoy, Kiril Dmitriev, in Washington in an effort to unblock the talks process. While Ukraine accepted Trump’s proposal for an unconditional ceasefire and subsequently also agreed to a plan for a limited maritime ceasefire, Russia has made new demands, including the lifting of some US sanctions.

“We are making progress. We hope we are getting closer to an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict,” Trump said Thursday during a Cabinet meeting.
