Aris Mougkopetros, a clarinet virtuoso and beloved figure in Greek traditional music with a strong presence at festivals across the country, was seriously injured in the early hours of Easter Monday, April 21. A firecracker exploded in his hands during a celebration in Tripotama, Achaia. According to medical sources, the explosion resulted in the amputation of two of his fingers. He was initially taken to the nearest hospital, but due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to the KAT hospital in Athens. So far, it remains unclear who set off the firecracker and under what circumstances. Police are continuing the investigation, taking statements from venue officials and attendees.

Who Is Aris Mougkopetros?

The well-known musician grew up in the village of Seires in the Kalavryta region, where he still spends most of his time. In a past interview, he stated, “The main reason I stay in the village is because I love it and it inspires me more in what I do.” His musical journey began at a very young age—he started playing music at nine, beginning with the flute and later discovering the clarinet. He once shared, “At first, I was self-taught, and later a grandfather from the neighboring village who played clarinet back in his day gave me the push to pursue it seriously.”

A master of the clarinet, he has had a long and active career in music, performing at live events, festivals, and on television. His most recent TV appearance was in March on the show “Atairiastoi”, and he also participated in “Buongiorno” on Tsiknopempti (Greek Carnival Thursday).

Legal Case for Violation of Fireworks Law

A criminal case has been filed against Aris Mougkopetros for violating Law 456/1976 concerning flares and fireworks, according to the Hellenic Police (ELAS). The owner of the venue where the incident occurred spoke to protothema.gr, calling it an isolated event that went unnoticed by most attendees.

“I was inside the venue. I just heard a ‘bang’—nothing more… We’ve held festivals like this for years, and nothing like this has ever happened. These things don’t happen in my place. It was just a bad moment,” said event organizer Konstantinos Vlachos. He added, “The most important thing is that the kid is okay. Aris basically grew up in my venue. We know each other well—this isn’t our first time organizing a celebration like this.”
