Weather: Major episode of African dust transport in the next 48 hours – Where it will rain today

Change of weather from the west with rainfall on Friday affecting much of the country - The forecast until Monday

Newsroom May 15 08:22

A change in the weather is expected across Greece starting today, with heavy rainfall and strong winds expected for the next 48 hours.

Specifically, as meteorologist, Thodoros Kolydas said in a post on X, from today, Thursday, May 15, a “change in the weather is expected from the West with rainfall that will affect much of the country on Friday and locally, especially in the northwest, will be heavy. At the same time, very strong winds will blow on Friday and there will be a dust transfer to the south.”

These changes are due to the arrival of the low pressure from Tunisia in our country, the meteorologist explains. However, the weather is expected to improve from Sunday, May 18.

Additional, but significant, episode of African dust transfer

According to meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens forecast data, strong changes in atmospheric circulation over the Mediterranean are expected to cause a temporary, but significant, episode of African dust transport in the evening hours of Thursday 15/05.

The cause of these changes in atmospheric circulation will be the movement of a barometric low from the Gulf of Sirte into the Black Sea and Turkey.

More specifically, winds from south to southeast directions that will precede the low pressure system as it approaches our country will carry large amounts of African dust, with a peak on Friday 16/05. On the contrary, the winds from the west to northwest that will follow the low as it moves away from our country will displace the African dust towards the Eastern Mediterranean.
