Dendias: “We cannot defend Europe if the enemy is within the walls”

The message sent by the Greek Minister of Defence from Brussels "photographing" Turkey

Newsroom May 20 06:01

Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias once again sent a message from Brussels to his European counterparts regarding the possibility of third countries participating in the EU‘s defence funding mechanisms, implicitly referring to Turkey.

“It is inconceivable for countries to participate indiscriminately in the European project when they threaten other countries – even EU member states, do not recognize other countries – even EU member states, and do not share the same values of democracy and human rights,” Mr. Dendias emphasized upon his arrival at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in the configuration of Defence Ministers. He concluded by saying:
“We cannot defend Europe if the enemy is within the walls.”

Full statement by the Minister of National Defence:

“Today, at the European Council of Defence Ministers, we are discussing a number of highly important issues. As always, Ukraine is a key topic.

But I would like to place particular emphasis on the effort being made through the SAFE Regulation and ReArm Europe—that is, the initiative to rearm Europe so that it is capable of defending itself. To defend a space of democracy, human rights, and the protection of human dignity.

Within this framework, we must be extremely careful. Greece has repeatedly stressed that it is essential for this initiative to include only those countries that respect and embrace the European Union’s system of values.

It is unacceptable for countries to take part indiscriminately in the European project when they threaten other nations, including EU member states, do not recognize other countries, including EU member states, and do not uphold the same democratic and human rights principles.

We cannot defend Europe if the enemy is within the walls.”
