The Patriarch of Antioch, John I, was contacted today by Nikos Dendias and George Gerapetritis to express their dismay at yesterday’s murderous attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus.

“I expressed my full support to Patriarch John I of Antioch, Patriarch of Antioch, in our telephone communication on the occasion of the attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elijah in Damascus. I also mentioned to His Beatitude that I look forward to a meeting with him within a short period of time,” the Defense Minister wrote in his X post.

For its part, the Foreign Ministry, in a post on the communication between Gerapetritis and Patriarch of Antioch, said: “Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis had a telephone conversation today with His Beatitude Patriarch John I of Antioch. He expressed his disgust at the horrific terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elijah in Damascus, which caused the death of dozens of Christians.”

The death toll from yesterday’s terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox church in Damascus has risen to 25, state media reported on Monday.

SANA, citing the health ministry, said another 63 people were wounded in the attack. About 350 people were reportedly praying at the church at the time of the attack.
