“No” from Tasoulas to Tsipras on the publication of the Council of Political Leaders’ minutes after the referendum

The proceedings of the Council of Political Leaders are classified, as they concern extremely serious national issues, and for this reason the minutes are not shared with the participants of the Council, emphasized the President of the Republic

Newsroom June 27 06:21

President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas has rejected former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s request to make public the minutes of the Council of Political Leaders meeting held on July 6, 2015.

Mr. Tsipras had made the request in a letter to the President of the Republic, in which he stated, among other things, that it is imperative to shed ample light on all aspects of the events of that period.

In his response to Mr. Tsipras, the President of the Republic clearly states that “the proceedings of the Council of Political Leaders are classified, as they concern extremely serious national issues, and for this reason the minutes are not shared with the participants of the Council.”

Mr. Tasoulas detailed in his response:

“Dear Mr. President, In your letter today, you ask me to make public the minutes of the Council of Political Leaders of 6/7/2015, which was convened the day after the referendum. As you know, the Council of Political Leaders is not provided for in the Constitution. It is therefore an informal body whose meetings are held behind closed doors, attended only by a minimal number of necessary third parties (minute-takers). The proceedings therein are classified, as they concern extremely serious national issues. Therefore, the minutes are not shared with the participants of the Council but remain with the Presidency of the Republic. The only publicity that follows a Council of Political Leaders is the joint communiqué that is issued. The same applied to the now-defunct, since 1986, similar Council of the Republic, whose minutes were also classified. A similar request to yours was recently submitted by the President of the “Course of Freedom” party on 28/8/2024, and the response given on 30/9/2024 by the President of the Republic was negative for the same reasons I have outlined above. In light of this, I consider that the publication of these minutes is not possible.”
