Newsroom June 30 10:11

A fire broke out on Monday afternoon (June 30) at a factory in Megara, west of Athens. The blaze started in the facility’s outdoor premises and is burning large quantities of plastic, releasing thick black smoke that has blanketed the surrounding area, creating a suffocating atmosphere.

An emergency alert from the 112 Civil Protection Service was sent to local residents, advising them to remain indoors and keep doors and windows shut due to the hazardous smoke.

Twelve fire engines and 25 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with reinforcements on the way. At this time, there is no threat to nearby homes.

Traffic diversions have been implemented near the factory and in front of the Panachrantou Monastery as a result of the fire.
