The Samos divers’ association has helped rescue over 2,500 refugees

More than 70 underwater clean-ups have been carried out in the ports and coasts of Samos, Fournoi, and Agathonisi

Newsroom July 2 06:50

The Samos Divers’ Association has been active for years in rescue operations, coastal cleanups, and responding to natural disasters on the island of Samos.

The Association stands as a model of service and volunteerism in the Aegean. With a mission that combines environmental action, social contribution, and operational readiness, it consistently remains on the front lines during crises as well as in the daily life of the island.

It has taken part in 250 search and rescue missions, saving 2,500 people and recovering 70 deceased from shipwrecks.

Over 70 underwater cleanups have been carried out at the ports and coasts of Samos, Fournoi, and Agathonisi, with impressive results.

The Association is integrated into the operational planning of the Samos Port Authority (inspections after the 2020 earthquake, grounded ships, pollution incidents) and the Fire Department (beach evacuations, transportation of personnel and drones, rescues during fires and earthquakes).

The Samos Divers’ Association has helped rescue over 3,000 refugees.

The 2021 Cleanup

On November 22, 2021, the 79th National Guard Higher Command (79 ΑΔΤΕ), the Athanassios Laskaridis Foundation with the vessel Typhoon, the Municipality of Eastern Samos, the Port Authority, and the Association collaborated on a major ecological mission.

Extensive areas of the northeastern coast were cleaned — from Cape Prasso to Asprochorti — beaches burdened by plastics, abandoned boats, and equipment.

The Association’s equipment and expertise were chosen by the Brigadier General of the 79 ΑΔΤΕ himself, over that of the special forces.

The work continues with consistency and passion, offering technical expertise, social responsibility, and a genuine love for Samos.
