Unprecedented crisis in Benghazi: Haftar declares European delegation unwelcome

Benghazi’s government issues official statement – Declares EU Migration Commissioner and the Ministers of Greece, Italy, and Malta persona non grata – Reports say they were blocked at the airport

Newsroom July 8 06:08

A diplomatic crisis is unfolding in eastern Libya, where the Haftar regime has declared members of a European delegation – including Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris – unwelcome. According to a statement issued by the Benghazi-based authorities, the ministers from Italy, Greece, and Malta, along with the EU Commissioner for Migration, were accused of “violations.”

It is believed that this unprecedented move by the eastern Libyan regime came in response to the delegation’s decision to visit Tripoli first – the seat of Libya’s UN-recognized government.

The official statement reads as follows:

“The scheduled visit of the Interior Ministers of Italy, Greece, Malta, and the EU Commissioner for Migration has been canceled.

The decision was made after their arrival at Benghazi’s Benina International Airport, where they were informed of the need to immediately leave Libyan territory as they are considered persona non grata.

What occurred is a flagrant violation of diplomatic protocol and international treaties and agreements, demonstrating a lack of respect for Libya’s national sovereignty and a breach of Libyan law.

The ministers failed to follow the organized procedures for the entry, movement, and accommodation of foreign diplomats, as specified in the circular issued by the Libyan government.

The Libyan government reiterates its respect for all diplomats and members of international missions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, while emphasizing the importance of respecting Libya’s sovereignty.

All parties must fully comply with Libyan laws, treaties, and international diplomatic customs when visiting the country, and must engage with the Libyan government based on the principle of reciprocity, as outlined in conventions, treaties, and international norms.”
