Crete: Over 4,300 traffic checks in the past three days – 1,389 violations recorded

Special focus on drunk driving and lack of helmet use

Intensive traffic checks continue across the Region of Crete. Over the last three days, 4,323 vehicle inspections were carried out, resulting in 1,389 traffic violations.

Particular attention was given to driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to wear a protective helmet by motorcyclists.

From July 11 to 13, traffic inspection teams were formed from the departments of Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Agios Nikolaos, as well as from the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK). They conducted extensive checks in various areas of the island.

Key Violations Included:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 82 (10 arrests for blood alcohol level over 0.60 mg/L)
  • Speeding: 68
  • Not wearing a helmet: 39
  • Not wearing a seatbelt: 40
  • Driving without a license: 26
  • Use of mobile phone while driving: 14
  • Driving in the wrong lane: 29
  • Illegal overtaking: 16
  • Improper maneuvers: 41
  • Running a red light: 8
  • Technical inspection violations (KTEO): 10
  • Illegal parking in disabled parking spots: 5
  • Other violations: 1,011

Police Statement:

The Crete Police Department emphasized that:

“Proper driving behavior and adherence to traffic rules are essential both for safe travel and for preventing traffic accidents.”

They also reminded the public of the ongoing national “Zero Tolerance for Helmet Non-Use” campaign by the Hellenic Police, aimed at improving road safety awareness.

Traffic officers continue to stress:

“Helmets save lives. They are the most important — and often the only — form of protection in a fall or collision, not just for the driver but also for the passenger.”
