Ministry of Shipping: Around 3,000 inspections of rented recreational watercraft by the Coast Guard – 265 violations recorded

89% of the country's most popular beaches found to have lifeguard services installed and active

Newsroom July 16 01:51

Between June and mid-July, a total of 2,965 inspections were carried out by members of the Hellenic Coast Guard on businesses renting recreational watercraft. These inspections resulted in 265 violations being recorded, with fines amounting to €79,760, in accordance with the provisions of Port Regulation 20. These checks are part of the broader plan of intensified supervision and safety implemented by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy.

At the same time, regarding lifeguard coverage on the country’s 663 busiest beaches, more than 99% have already been inspected, and 89% of the beaches have an installed and active lifeguard presence. According to the Ministry of Shipping, this represents one of the highest performances in recent years.

“Safety at sea and on the beaches is not just an obligation, it is a matter of public responsibility. We do not become complacent, and we do not compromise. Through intensive inspections, clear instructions, and rapid implementation of the plan, we ensure that the summer of our citizens and visitors is safe and functional,” emphasized Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vassilis Kikilias, noting that the Ministry remains on operational alert throughout the tourist season.
