Parliament: New Democracy submits proposal for inquiry committee on OPEKEPE with 60 signatures

The proposal is expected to be put to a vote towards the end of July

Newsroom July 16 01:53

New Democracy has formally submitted a proposal to the Greek Parliament calling for the establishment of a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the operations of OPEKEPE—the Hellenic Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aid—from its founding in 1998 to the present day. The committee will aim to investigate and determine any political responsibilities related to the agency’s actions over the past 25 years.

The proposal, signed by 60 New Democracy MPs, was presented by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Giorgos Georgantas. According to parliamentary sources, the motion is expected to be brought to a vote by the end of July. If approved, the inquiry committee will begin its work in September.

Speaking in Parliament, New Democracy parliamentary representative Dimitris Kairidis urged MPs from all opposition parties to support the motion, framing the investigation as a step toward transparency and institutional accountability.

The formation of such a committee has been widely viewed as a necessary move by the government, especially in light of the recent case file from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. While the file implicates political figures, the government maintains there is no indication of criminal liability at this stage.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has emphasized that the government does not prejudge the outcome of the inquiry, nor will it base its stance on “theories” or speculation. However, he stressed the administration’s commitment to uncovering the truth.

According to sources close to the Prime Minister’s office, the central objective of the inquiry is to “identify and investigate all chronic dysfunctions within OPEKEPE, pinpoint systemic failures, and ensure a full process of accountability and transparency—ultimately serving the interests of our agricultural producers, the livestock sector, and the country as a whole.”

The inquiry is expected to shed light on long-standing issues within one of Greece’s most critical agencies for distributing EU agricultural subsidies, and could become a defining political moment heading into the autumn.
