Complaint for bribery and humiliation of a patient at a regional hospital – Georgiades post

The doctor allegedly asked for 100 €, threatened the patient even in the operating room and demanded an apology to continue the operation - Immediate intervention of the Ministry of Health with an EDE and an appeal to the Public Prosecutor's Office

Serious Complaint Against Regional Hospital Doctor Prompts Immediate Action

A serious complaint involving a doctor at a Regional District Hospital has come to light, prompting swift intervention by the Ministry of Health. The complaint includes allegations of soliciting money, degrading treatment of a patient, and issuing threats. An Immediate Administrative Inquiry has been launched, and the case file has already been forwarded to the Public Prosecutor.

The Incident

The patient, who visited the hospital for treatment of a kidney stone, claims that a surgeon directly asked him for €100 to operate. When the patient refused, the doctor allegedly treated him with shocking cynicism during the operation. According to the complaint, the doctor demanded an apology from the patient before proceeding with the surgery, even going so far as to say—publicly—that he didn’t need the money because he already had plenty.

The patient also reports being threatened afterward, including disturbing references to “Albanian involvement” if he continued to pursue justice. A formal complaint was submitted to the hospital administrator, who reportedly pledged an immediate investigation.

Health Minister Orders Action

The complaint was brought to the attention of the Ministry of Health, prompting immediate action by the Minister. As announced, an Immediate Administrative Inquiry (EDE) was launched, and the case is being referred to the Public Prosecutor to investigate potential criminal charges.

The Minister stated that if the allegations are confirmed, the doctor will be permanently removed from the National Health System (NHS), and the Ministry will request the relevant Medical Association to begin proceedings to revoke his medical license.

Message to Citizens: “Do Not Be Afraid—Report Misconduct”

The Minister emphasized that the vast majority of NHS doctors are honest and dedicated professionals, and that such behavior will not be tolerated. He reminded the public that all services provided in the NHS are free of charge and warned that no doctor has the right to request money from patients.

He added that doctors who wish to legally increase their income may now offer private services outside working hours, thanks to recent reforms—already utilized by over 20% of NHS medical staff.

The Minister concluded by encouraging all citizens to report any inappropriate demands or threats, assuring them that their complaints will be treated seriously and not be buried in bureaucracy. He also confirmed that he contacted the complainant and assured him that justice would be served.

Official Statement by Minister Adonis Georgiadis

“I received the following complaint via my personal mobile phone about a District Hospital in the provinces:

The patient visited the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a kidney stone by a surgeon. The doctor immediately asked for €100 to perform the operation. The patient initially said he had no money with him and would return with it, but later decided not to go through with the payment. A few days later, the patient returned for the scheduled surgery, performed by other doctors. During the procedure, complications arose, and the same surgeon was called in. When he arrived, he stood over the patient and, in front of everyone, demanded an apology before continuing the operation. He told the patient he didn’t need the money because he already had plenty. Feeling vulnerable, the patient apologized to ensure the surgery would continue.

In the days that followed, the patient was subjected to threats, including vague references to having ‘Albanians take care of him’ if he pursued the matter. He reported the incident to the hospital administrator, who noted the seriousness of the complaint and promised immediate action.

I ordered the administrative inquiry, which will begin immediately. Fortunately, the hospital administrator had already initiated action. The complaint will also be submitted to the Public Prosecutor in the morning. If these allegations are verified, this ‘gentleman’ will no longer be associated with the NHS. I will also request that the Medical Association begin disciplinary procedures to revoke his medical license.

Let me say clearly: the vast majority of our doctors are honorable and ethical. But we will root out the few who violate that trust.

Citizens must not pay any extra charges for public healthcare services. Everything in the NHS is free. If any doctor demands additional payment, report it. Do not be afraid. The rule of law is stronger than these threats.

I personally contacted the complainant and assured him that his case will not be lost in red tape.
