Live: Mitsotakis addresses Parliament on proposal for Inquiry Committee on OPEKEPE

Prime Minister speaks from the Parliament floor on the proposal to form an Inquiry Committee

Newsroom July 29 12:48

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is currently speaking from the Parliament floor, addressing the proposal submitted by New Democracy to establish an Inquiry Committee regarding the OPEKEPE case.

Watch Mitsotakis’ address to Parliament live:

Inquiry into Errors and Omissions in the System Since 1998

As scheduled, today’s session discusses New Democracy’s proposal for an inquiry and in-depth investigation dating back to 1998, aiming to document long-standing errors and omissions in the agricultural subsidy payment system. On Wednesday, Parliament will debate proposals from the opposition (PASOK, SYRIZA – New Left), which, using the case file prepared by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, are calling for a limited criminal investigation into the actions of former ministers Makis Voridis and Lefteris Avgenakis.

According to official party statements, this two-day high-stakes debate on the OPEKEPE case is expected to conclude with approval of the Inquiry Committee and rejection of the pre-investigative proposals.

Today’s vote on the Inquiry Committee will not involve ballot boxes—it will be conducted by name and electronically, requiring a simple majority of those present.

Tomorrow’s process, however, will involve two ballot boxes: one for M. Voridis and another for L. Avgenakis. The vote will be secret, and at least 151 “yes” votes are needed to approve referral. Given that the opposition holds a total of 142 MPs, and with independents D. Kyriazidis and Ch. Katsivardas likely to align with the government’s stance, passing the pre-investigative proposals would require a “revolt” by at least 11 New Democracy MPs. While difficult, this scenario becomes nearly impossible if ND ultimately opts to abstain.
