Purple jellyfish spreading toward the Cyclades and Corinthian Gulf – Live map shows which beaches are affected

The Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory reports that records of purple jellyfish in July began in the southern Evian Sea while "we see extensions to the Cyclades and Corinth"

Newsroom August 7 06:39

The return of purple jellyfish to Greek waters this summer has raised concerns among residents and relevant authorities, who are actively monitoring the areas where these marine creatures are being spotted.

The Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory reports that sightings of purple jellyfish began in southern Evia in July, and now “we’re seeing a spread toward the Cyclades and the Corinthian Gulf.” The good news is that “Pagasetic Gulf and the Sporades are in a much better condition compared to June.”

Live Map Tracks Purple Jellyfish Sightings

The Observatory has released maps showing confirmed sightings of purple jellyfish in Greece during July.

  • Black dots on the map indicate confirmed records.
  • Red shading shows the extent of their spread: the more intense the color, the more frequent and severe their presence.
  • Areas with lighter red indicate isolated or occasional incidents, which may shift based on ocean currents.

On the map, the size of each dot corresponds to the jellyfish population recorded – the larger the dot, the more jellyfish have been spotted.

A live map is available where you can check current reports of purple or other jellyfish and sea creatures [HERE].

What to Do if You’re Stung by a Purple Jellyfish:

  1. Remove any tentacles stuck to your skin – not with bare hands, as this can cause them to stick to your hands and spread irritation.
  2. Rinse the area thoroughly with seawater. Do not use fresh water, as it may activate stingers still on the skin. If needed, rub the area gently with sand to dislodge tentacles.
  3. Apply ice or cold compresses to the sting site to reduce local skin reactions.
  4. Use a corticosteroid cream to relieve inflammation, pain, and itching.
  5. Take an antihistamine pill to treat symptoms like itching over a broader area. This is especially important if a large area of skin is affected.
  6. If symptoms are severe or persistent, you may require an injection of corticosteroids. In such cases, go to the nearest hospital or health center immediately.
