Battle for life: Animal rescues from the flames in Achaia

It is not only the protection of human life that is at stake, but also that of animals who unfortunately have no voice to ask for help.

Newsroom August 13 09:41

The fires raging at Akhaia, Preveza, Chios and Kefalonia are not only burning forest areas and houses but also threatening the innocent souls of animals trapped in the flames. Dogs, cats, sheep, horses, cows and other animals, faithful companions of humans, are facing the horror. At a time when people are struggling to save their properties and evacuating areas, the animals have no means of escaping the flames.

The anguish of volunteers, firefighters and everyone at the fires is immense. It is not only the protection of human life that is at stake, but also that of the animals who unfortunately have no voice to call for help.

However, there are also images of hope: Animals escaping the fire and being in the arms of rescuers and finding shelter in safe hands, sheep being led safely away from the flames. Every rescue is a small victory for life.

Volunteers and firefighters amidst thick smoke and debris try to rescue animals that have been stranded. The AP photo of a man in Achaia, with a sheep in his arms, riding a motorbike away from the fire is telling.
