Sicily horror: Bridge collapses while cars are crossing – Terrifying video

The footage released highlights the poor state of the infrastructure, which had been identified as problematic for some time and was further aggravated by the heavy rainfall of recent days

Newsroom August 18 04:33

Shocking footage from Sicily shows the dramatic collapse of the San Giuliano bridge near Randazzo, Catania, while vehicles were still on it. The terrifying moment has gone viral, highlighting the poor condition of the infrastructure, which had long been labeled problematic and further weakened by days of heavy rainfall.

Drivers Escape Death as Bridge Gives Way

Motorists crossing the bridge narrowly avoided tragedy when parts of the structure suddenly broke off, sending chunks of concrete and earth crashing into the void. In the video, cars can be seen still moving along the bridge as debris falls away beneath them.

Thanks to the drivers’ quick reaction, the worst was avoided: traffic was immediately halted, no injuries were reported, and authorities swiftly closed the bridge. Repair work is already underway.

Infrastructure “Ticking Time Bomb”

The collapse underscores the dangerous state of Sicily’s road network. Experts had long flagged the San Giuliano bridge as unsafe, but recent extreme weather accelerated the deterioration, making the collapse inevitable.

The failure has cut off access between Randazzo and several municipalities in the province of Messina, raising the risk of isolation for thousands of residents.

Daily Life in Chaos

Randazzo, home to more than 8,000 people, is the closest urban hub providing essential services. With the bridge closed, residents now face severe disruptions:

  • Delayed access to emergency health services
  • Difficulties reaching secondary schools
  • Interruptions in regional and rail transport (FCE – Ferrovia Circumetnea)
  • Shortages in medicines, consumer goods, and vital supplies

The San Giuliano bridge was a critical lifeline for the area’s daily life and functionality. Its collapse has reignited urgent calls for Italy to prioritize infrastructure safety before another disaster claims lives.
