24-hour metro operation starts on September 13 every Saturday – Ticket prices will not increase

24-hour operation will also apply to certain bus lines and the Tram – What the pilot routes had shown

Newsroom August 28 10:19

A new era for the metro begins, as from September 13 it will operate 24 hours every Saturday, aiming to facilitate Athens residents and reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.

The announcement was made by Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis, who noted that similar 24-hour operation will apply to certain bus lines and the Tram during the busiest months. At the same time, Mr. Kyranakis thanked the employees and announced that there will be financial rewards for the night services.

Meanwhile, the government assures that there will be no increase in ticket prices, while inspections for fare evasion will be intensified.

In addition, the minister announced the gradual elimination of trolleybuses in Athens and Piraeus, which will take place in two phases: first the overhead wires and poles of the lines will be removed, and then the vehicles will be replaced with electric buses.

The successful trial
We recall that on Saturday, July 5, OASA carried out a pilot 24-hour operation of the Metro (lines 2 and 3), the Tram (lines T6 and T7), as well as selected bus lines, covering key points of the Attica basin.

The pilot implementation of the measure was evaluated and considered successful, based on operational and qualitative data obtained. At that time, Mr. Kyranakis had also spoken of a successful trial.
