Chania: The operation that revealed the mafia in Crete – The two undercover policemen, the prosecutor and the hidden briefings

"Trojan horse" for ELAS' two policemen who infiltrated the criminal organization in June

Newsroom September 1 07:59

Two undercover police officers, who arrived in Crete to work in a catering shop, were the Trojan Horse of the Chania Security, so that they could infiltrate the criminal organization, map it, and ultimately, dismantle it completely.

The investigation by Chania Security essentially began last February, but June was the crucial month when two police officers chose to leave their uniforms and become members of the criminal organization. This story could easily have been another movie script, but it’s absolutely true and clearly indicative of how deep the Greek Police had gotten into the organization.

All this happened after the Chania Prosecutor’s Office gave the green light for police officers to enter gangs for the first time in Crete. The magistrate, in fact, was fully informed about the progress of the investigation at all times and had clear knowledge of everyone involved.

The policemen, then, arrived in Crete in June and started working in a catering shop, where they slowly began to come into contact with the people their colleagues from the Chania Security had pointed out to them.

They managed methodically and cleverly to gain the absolute trust of these people, who, feeling that they were talking to their own people, said a lot, but all of which ended up in the Security of Chania.

Within a few weeks, the two officers, who never set foot in the Chania Police Hall, managed to map out from the first to the last member of the criminal organization, collecting vital information about those involved.

The briefings took place in a very close circle of police officers, in secluded areas, at night, giving the case a spying dimension. Or was it really an operation that would be the envy of the most prestigious secret services?

The contribution of the two policemen, who turned up in Crete to work for seasons, was of key importance and will go down in the island’s police annals.

At the same time, raids by the ELAS. did not stop at night either, as an operation was carried out in four cells in the Agia prison, where members of the organisation were being held, to trace telephone devices in their possession.
